The Earliest LED Track Lamp, Targeting the Replacement of Halogen Lamps

At the beginning, the technology of LED was not outstanding. Its color rendering, light efficiency, and other aspects were incomparable to today's products. However, under the trend of energy conservation and environmental protection, people easily accepted this new product. The first batch of LED track lamps were mostly manufacturers who offered light sources for lamp holders, and the concept of integrated design LED products hadn't yet been introduced.

Second-generation LED track lamps: SMD (single-light-source type)

Gradually, the technological advances of the LED chip were applied to lighting manufacturers, and coupled with the introduction of integrated LED products from abroad, a new generation of LED track lamps shone brightly onto the scene. This stage of LED track lamps can be said to be an era of rapid growth, with research and development engineers and quality inspectors facing great challenges.

On one hand, the heat dissipation and optical design of LED posed unfamiliar tasks for them and required a lot of exploration and experimental testing. On the other hand, LED technology updated too quickly, with new light sources often coming out before a product was even ready for mass production.

In terms of application effect, the energy-saving effect of this stage of LED track lamps was not actually significant, and the color rendition was also not satisfactory. However, due to the dense market promotion, customers were willing to try this new type of product and it became a trend. Some larger-scale chain brands applied this type of product with relative caution.

Third-generation LED track lamps: COB type

When COB light sources appeared, application manufacturers found that this new type of LED with concentrated packaging, small size and high power made product design easier. And in the same size, the lamps could achieve higher power, meeting the demand for higher luminous flux, making COB type track lights the most mainstream LED track lamps in modern commercial lighting spaces.

Of course, the optical design of COB type track spotlights has undergone several changes, and there are several different types available on the market.

There are three types: single reflective cup type (also the earliest), reflective cup + light guide pillar type, and lens type. Each has its own characteristics and advantages. For example, products using the reflective cup type have high utilization efficiency, while COB track spotlights with lens type can have a relatively uniform transition for the light distribution, and the lens can also be made thinner, thereby reducing the length of the lamp body.

The main characteristics of COB type track spotlights

  • A wide range of power, with 3W, 5W small power products meeting the needs of restaurants and home spaces, while larger power products such as 25W and 35W fulfill the needs of store lighting;

  • A wide range of color temperature, from 2400K, 2700K to 5000K, 6000K, diversified and customizable, breaking through the limitation of color temperature such as 3000K, 4000K for halogen lamps, and meeting the needs of more sub-areas;

  • There is also better progress in color rendering.

Now that COB technology has progressed, it can be applied in different sub-areas, and the application effects in various display venues are also great.
